The videos are accessible to you at any time, so this course will always fit into your schedule.
Please note that this course is 100% online, however your address & postcode are required for registrations. GROWBoxes or other physical products are not currently shipped to the UK, but will be available soon! Sign up to our newsletter to keep up to date with UK availability.
Veg featured in the course: Tomatoes, chilli peppers, squash, courgette, peas, carrots, beetroot, lettuce, rocket and Oriental greens. A mix of the fast-growing quick wins and slow-growing but most rewarding veg, this selection is chosen for diversity and deliciousness.
The course is designed for anyone with as little as 5 square metres of growing space. Mick will be growing all 10 veg in two locations at GROW HQ, the home of our TV series Grow Cook Eat. Both of these locations are designed to replicate typical household growing spaces. The TV Garden consists of 3 raised beds and a small greenhouse, while Container Corner is an outdoor deck where everything will be grown in pots and other containers.
What tools and things are needed? The course is designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing you to grow the 10 veg with little more than the 10 types of seeds, bags of compost and containers.
Essential items you will need are:
- Seeds
- Compost
- Small pots or module trays
- Sticks and string
- Beds and/or containers
However, various tools and other things will certainly make your life easier, especially if you are growing in beds rather than containers. The standard set of garden tools – trowel, spade, fork, hoe and rake are all recommended. All of these items will be available from your local garden centre. We will also discuss and use organic products for controlling pests and providing liquid feeds, but we will also show you how to make homemade versions. For harvesting and preserving we will use basic kitchen equipment.
The course will be delivered in 10 steps over the course of the growing year, from preparing beds in Spring to storing your veg for the winter months. Each step will be broken down into a few key parts to ensure that each phase is kept as simple and straightforward as possible. After signing up for the course, you will be invited to create an account where you will be able to access all published video lessons along with summary notes and key actions. You will then receive an email when each new lesson is ready. The first two lessons cover essential skills that will be repeated throughout the course, with the following lessons spread across one month each.
Start before the end of April to grow your veg from seed. From May onward, you may need to use seedlings, which you can buy from your local garden centre.
Video lessons are about 20 – 30 minutes in length, divided into 4 – 6 parts. The lessons are sent directly to your inbox, as they become available.

Seeds: We recommend the 12 veg that Mick will be growing in this course, but get as many as you feel comfortable with. If you want to grow something outside of these 12, do! Each lesson will give lots of really useful information to apply to growing almost types of veg, and we have videos on just about every vegetable you could imagine elsewhere on the GIY site. A wide variety of seeds are available from our online shop.
Soil: A single bag of multi-purpose compost, available at garden centres and supermarkets.
Containers: Small pots or module trays for each of your veg are traditional, and are available at garden centres. But we recommend upcycling wherever possible – empty pots, cans, cartons, and even toilet roll inserts do exactly the same thing.
